An unauthorized version created for airplay on AM stations - During 1978, FM was part of the Top 40 charts, but AM stations didn’t want to promote their competition... this was their solution - bonus points to anyone who can figure out where the spliced s ound sample was borrowed from without looking it up...

It’s gotta be from Aja , right? (Didn’t look it up, I swear - I just love Steely Dan’s original run of records, Can’t Buy a Thrill through Gaucho . I have no use for the reconstituted ‘90s & later stuff.)

I know FM was a non-album single, but rather than having it floating around alone in my digital library, I added it as the 8th track to Aja .

eta: that’s some irony right there, bragging about “ no static at all” wrt AM radio.

It’s from Aja.  Their original run is great!  Probably some of my favorite music around.  I’ll have to follow suit with FM like you have - I like it but I never really had anywhere to put it!

I’m not generally a big fan of what’s become known as yacht rock, and I despise so many of the bands that Steely Dan often gets lumped in with, but there’s just something about their sleaze & cynical humor that I love. And I’m not exactly their prime demo - I’m only a bit older than their debut album, but when FM & Hey Nineteen were brand new, I absolutely fell in love.

Yeah, I was a weird kid. There weren’t many of my middle school peers interested in Elvis Costello or Richard Thompson, either.
